Indian Equity Research for US Hedge Funds: A Source and Workflow Guide

A US hedge fund researching Indian equities needs local primary evidence and a research process that keeps periods, units, currencies and reporting bases explicit. The analyst’s location does not change the company’s facts, but it can make a familiar-looking global summary easier to misread.

The most useful starting point is a small, carefully reconciled coverage list. Establish what the original disclosures say, identify the business questions that matter and decide how later information will update the research. This is a workflow guide, not a list of Indian securities to buy or a guide to obtaining market access.

Begin with the issuer and exchange record

The NSE financial-results portal, reviewed 15 October 2026, provides a route to company results organised by company and period. It is a source-discovery starting point, not a substitute for reading the selected filing and notes.

Issuer investor-relations pages can provide the surrounding presentation, annual report, transcript and guidance history. For example, Infosys’s quarterly and annual report archive organises reporting periods and links annual Form 20-F material. The archive illustrates source organisation, not a recommendation or a conclusion about the company.

Retain the exact document reference used for each material claim. A portal that lists many filings is useful for discovery; the final research note should identify the particular disclosure and period behind its statement.

Translate the labels before analysing the trend

An Indian filing may report amounts in rupees, lakhs, crores or millions. A crore is ten million; a lakh is one hundred thousand. Those are unit conversions, not exchange rates.

Currency conversion is a separate operation. If a team presents a rupee series in dollars, it must state the exchange-rate convention and the period to which it applies. A single reporting-date rate is not automatically the appropriate rate for every flow in a financial model.

Keep the original local-currency series available. Otherwise a change driven by currency translation can be mistaken for a change in the underlying business. A higher dollar growth rate and a higher rupee growth rate are not interchangeable observations.

The USD/INR business-exposure guide explains the wider distinction between translation and operating exposure. No current exchange rate is assumed here.

Match fiscal periods rather than quarter names

“Q1” is not a date. Many Indian issuers use a March financial year-end, but the analyst should verify each issuer’s actual calendar. Compare period start and end dates before combining a local quarterly result with a global peer dataset.

Also distinguish a single quarter from cumulative year-to-date reporting. A nine-month figure is not a third-quarter figure. Deriving a quarter from cumulative disclosures needs comparable bases and a documented calculation, not a subtraction between unrelated releases.

The quarterly, year-to-date and annual reconciliation guide explains the checks. Keep any restated comparator separate from the original version used in earlier research.

Establish the reporting basis

Standalone and consolidated financial statements answer different questions. A parent-only result should not silently become the numerator in a ratio whose denominator describes the consolidated group.

Segment disclosures require their own definitions. A segment’s revenue, profit measure and capital employed may not match the way a third-party platform organises the same business. Acquisitions, disposals and recast segments can also break a superficially continuous series.

When results, a presentation and the earnings call appear to disagree, first check currency, period, scope and definition. Our disclosure-reconciliation guide shows why an apparent numerical contradiction can be a measurement mismatch.

Use sector-appropriate operating questions

A standard company template can organise the work, but it cannot make every business comparable. A bank’s funding and credit-quality questions differ from an industrial supplier’s delivery and working-capital questions.

For consumer businesses, separate shipments to distribution from purchases by final customers. For service businesses, separate bookings from recognised revenue. For infrastructure, separate announced capacity from operating capacity and cash collection.

The Sector Intelligence desk supplies these general research lenses. It does not rank industries or establish that a company has a particular exposure merely because of its sector label.

Preserve guidance as a dated statement

Record what management said, when it said it, which business or period it referred to and the conditions attached. An analyst’s interpretation belongs in a separate field from the original statement.

Do not assume an absence of updated guidance means the earlier guidance was reaffirmed. Nor should an optimistic phrase become a numerical assumption without a stated bridge. If the evidence is missing, leave the point unresolved.

When a later disclosure arrives, compare it with the assumption that was actually used. The financial-model update guide explains how a research observation can become a reviewable model change.

Design the handoff across time zones

Define the information cut-off for each review. Record both the period described by a disclosure and when it became publicly available, with a time zone if timing affects the assignment. A fiscal period end is not the day the market learned the result.

Have one person establish the source pack and another challenge the interpretation. Keep unresolved discrepancies visible for the next shift or meeting rather than forcing a complete-looking answer before the right evidence is available.

The research-management guide develops that handoff record. The aim is a process a colleague can continue, not simply a faster morning summary.

Evaluate the local research layer alongside the global stack

A US desk may already have market-data, content and portfolio systems. An India-focused research layer should be evaluated against the local problems that remain, not marketed as a universal replacement.

Altys’s public methodology emphasises primary sources, dates, compatible calculations and explicit missing data. Its solutions overview is India-first. A relevant evaluation would start with the team’s required Indian companies, historical periods and inspectable research outputs.

Confirm coverage and deployment requirements directly. Request access with a concrete India research task, or use the research-tools shortlist to compare the wider categories.

Research capability does not establish permission to trade. Market access, registration, custody, taxation, shorting and other obligations require separate review by the fund’s qualified advisers and service providers. No legal or investment conclusion follows from choosing software.

Educational research workflow only. No securities recommendations, model allocations, returns or market-access advice. Altys Labs is not a SEBI-registered Research Analyst or Investment Adviser.

Frequently asked questions

How should a US hedge fund begin researching Indian equities?

Start with issuer and exchange disclosures, establish the fiscal period, currency, units and reporting basis, then reconcile operating evidence and guidance. Build a dated research record rather than relying only on a global summary.

Does a US research team need different data from an Indian team?

The underlying company facts are the same. A cross-border team additionally needs explicit currency and unit handling, time-zone awareness and a clear mapping between local disclosures and its existing research process.

Is researching India the same as having permission to trade Indian securities?

No. Research tools do not establish market access, registration, custody, tax treatment, shorting availability or regulatory permission. Those are separate matters for the fund and its qualified advisers and service providers.

Can a US-based team evaluate Altys for India research?

A US-based team can request a discussion about an India-focused workflow. Confirm coverage, history, access and commercial requirements directly. This does not imply that Altys supplies a US securities database or an execution service.
