The Nifty Is Rising. How Much of the Market Is Joining In?
Official index closes show broad gains from 30 October to 4 November 2026, but sector participation differed. Compare like-for-like price returns.
The early-November rise extended beyond the Nifty 50 in the selected official index data. Broad participation across size groups nevertheless coexisted with a decline in the IT index, so “the market rose” remains an incomplete description of the period.
Observation window: 30 October close to 4 November 2026 close. Published 5 November. Returns cover the three subsequent trading sessions. They do not include the 30 October intraday return.
The larger market joined the move
The following calculations use the closing-value column in NSE’s 30 October file and 4 November file. Each is a price-index comparison using the same endpoints.

| Observation | Per cent price change, 30 October close to 4 November close |
|---|---|
| Nifty 50 | 3.94 |
| 50 equal wt | 3.65 |
| Nifty 500 | 3.99 |
| 500 equal wt | 4.21 |
| Midcap 150 | 3.89 |
| Smallcap 250 | 3.78 |

Altys interpretation: a description of the move as exclusively a few large companies lifting the benchmark would miss these broader gains. However, the gap between two weighting schemes is not a complete measure of how evenly returns were distributed.
Equal weighting changes the relative importance of constituents. It does not eliminate sector exposure, rebalancing effects or differences among individual companies. Two indices can finish with similar returns through very different combinations of winners and losers.
Sector participation was less uniform

Selected official sector price indices, not all sectors and not company earnings. A sector-index change does not identify its cause or every constituent's return. Source: NSE daily index files.
Altys interpretation: the sector comparison is a better starting point for explaining why two Indian portfolios could experience this same period differently. Size exposure alone is insufficient when industry exposures also differ.
It would still be a mistake to read these bars as a ranking of business prospects. A price move can reflect expectations, positioning or company-specific news within an index. The chart does not establish that oil-company profits improved, that FMCG volumes accelerated or that IT customer demand weakened during these three sessions.
What the arithmetic measures
The calculation is deliberately simple:
Price change = (ending close ÷ starting close − 1) × 100
For example, the Nifty 50 endpoints are 23,053.10 and 23,960.60. Comparing raw index levels across different series would be meaningless because their base values differ. Comparing percentage changes over the same dates avoids that problem.
These are not total returns. Dividends are excluded. They are not annualised, and a three-session result should not be projected over a year. The downloadable data retain both closes rather than just the rounded percentages shown in the charts.
What remains a separate research question
This report does not calculate a security-level advance/decline ratio, the proportion of shares above a moving average, or the percentage making new highs. Those require different observations and, in some cases, a point-in-time constituent universe. We do not substitute index performance for a count we have not established.
The existing market-breadth guide explains those additional measures. The foreign-flow report uses its own transaction window, which must not be silently equated with this price window.
For a company analyst, the next step is to connect the price discussion to actual disclosures. Did the latest result alter revenue quality, cash collection or funding requirements? A sector rally does not answer those questions for an individual business.
A dated comparison, not a market call
The evidence supports a narrow conclusion: the selected size and weighting indices participated in this rise, while selected sectors differed materially. It does not identify the next market direction or a portfolio allocation.

Frequently asked questions
Was the early-November 2026 rise confined to the Nifty 50?
No. Between the 30 October and 4 November closes, the selected broad-market and equal-weight price indices also rose. That does not establish that every constituent or portfolio gained.
What return does this report calculate?
Closing index value on 4 November divided by the 30 October closing value, minus one. It is an unannualised price return across three subsequent trading sessions, excluding dividends.
Does an equal-weight comparison count advancing stocks?
No. It compares index weighting schemes. An actual advance/decline count requires the relevant dated security-level universe and prices.
